In brief
  • The serial numbers of RTX Founders Edition graphics cards are fading.
  • The absence of a legible number results in a denial of warranty service.
  • The problem has affected the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 FE models.
  • Experts link the defect to heat and friction in a closed case.

Users of Nvidia GeForce RTX Founders Edition graphics cards have started reporting that the serial numbers printed on the devices lose readability over time. According to one post on Reddit (user Willing-Avocado-4830), an attempt to return a faulty RTX 5090 FE was rejected because the number had completely faded and was unrecognizable.

The scale of the problem

The case with the RTX 5090 turned out to be just the tip of the iceberg. Other owners of flagship models, including the RTX 5080 Founders Edition, have confirmed a similar situation. PC Gamer magazine, while testing a sample of the RTX 5080 FE, also found signs of fading markings, indicating a systemic nature of the defect rather than a one-off manufacturing flaw.

Previously, serial numbers were applied to separate stickers, but in the latest versions of the Founders Edition, they are placed directly on the bottom of the PCIe bracket. This position makes the markings more susceptible to heat and mechanical friction, especially in closed cases where component temperatures can be high.

The exact cause of the disappearance of the inscriptions has not yet been established. Experts suggest that constant thermal heating, as well as possible micro-movements during component replacement, may contribute to the erasure of paint or printing. Nvidia has not officially commented on the issue, and a previously published statement from a company representative has disappeared from public access.

The serial number plays a key role in the process of verifying the authenticity and warranty status of the graphics card. In the USA, Nvidia's warranty is provided only to the original purchaser, not to those who acquire the device on the secondary market. Therefore, the absence of a readable number can completely block the possibility of contacting the service center.

In Nvidia's official instructions for the RMA procedure, there is no clear indication that a readable serial number is mandatory. However, in practice, support services require it to confirm the right to service. Additionally, warranty rules vary by country, complicating the situation for international buyers.

Experts advise owners of graphics cards with still readable numbers to take a photo and store it in a safe place. Such a backup option can help in case of further fading and expedite the process of contacting the service center.

Until Nvidia provides an official solution, users continue to discuss the issue in specialized communities, demanding clearer instructions and possibly alternative ways to identify devices.
