The impact of gambling on Ukrainian society

On October 14, a presentation of the research results dedicated to the impact of gambling on Ukrainian society took place at the UNIAN press center in Kyiv. The study was conducted by the Responsible Gaming Center at the initiative of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and with the support of the Association of Ukrainian Gambling Business Operators. The main conclusion of the research is the need for systematic public education about the risks of gambling, especially among youth and military personnel.

According to the research data, only 15% of Ukrainians consider themselves gamblers, while 76% of respondents have a negative attitude towards gambling. This highlights the low level of public awareness about the legalization of gambling in the country. 75% of respondents believe that many Ukrainians face problems related to gambling, indicating the need for a more active state policy in this area.

Moreover, 68% of Ukrainians believe that the government does not sufficiently restrict gambling, and 48% advocate for stricter advertising of gambling. These figures highlight public concern about the impact of gambling on the health and well-being of citizens. It is important to note that 75% of respondents consider gambling a serious social challenge that requires attention from the authorities.

Key findings of the study

During the round table, participants discussed how the data obtained can help improve the protection of people from the negative consequences of gambling. Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Natalia Denikeeva noted that 45% of players report financial problems, while 41% experience stress and anxiety. This underscores the need for preventive measures and the creation of accessible resources to assist players.

The study also included surveys among target groups such as youth, internally displaced persons, and military personnel. The director of the Sociological Center 'Sociоinform', Natalia Zaitseva-Chipak, emphasized that the results cannot be generalized to the entire category of military personnel, but show certain trends. This is important for understanding the specifics of the problems faced by different population groups.

The head of the project office of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, Zoryana Toporetska, noted that even if gambling affects a small part of the population, among them there may be people experiencing serious problems. She emphasized that it is necessary not only to introduce restrictions but also to create safe conditions for players so that they can receive professional help if needed.

The need for education and protection

The President of the Association of Ukrainian Gambling Business Operators, Taras Shevchenko, added that 70% of Ukrainians are against the legalization of gambling, despite it already being legalized in the country. He noted that gambling should be viewed as entertainment rather than a way to earn money, and that implementing the principles of responsible gaming is extremely important.

The connection between gambling addiction and mental health was also discussed at the event. Ruslan Korshun, the chief specialist of the Public Health Center, reported that gambling addiction is often accompanied by other mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety. This highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to the treatment and support of people with gambling addiction.

The results of the study will help determine the level of public awareness about the principles of responsible gaming and identify areas where state regulation needs to be strengthened. Oleksiy Tomashuk, acting head of the state agency PlayCity, emphasized the importance of systematic education not only for players but for society as a whole.

Mental Health and Gambling

An important aspect of the research is the creation of standards for medical care for people with pathological gambling addiction. This will improve the quality of care and support for those facing this issue. It is important for society to understand that gambling addiction is not just a personal problem, but a serious social challenge.

In conclusion, the results of the research emphasize the need for active government involvement in regulating gambling and protecting citizens. Society should be informed about the risks and consequences of gambling, as well as the available resources for assistance. This will create a safer environment for all participants in the gambling market.

Thus, the study conducted by the Center for Responsible Gaming opens new horizons for discussing and addressing issues related to gambling in Ukraine. It is important that the results of the study are used to shape effective policies and programs aimed at protecting citizens and improving their quality of life.
