  • Participants lost an average of 3-4 kg over 12 weeks
  • Further research is needed to confirm the results

The influence of meal timing on weight loss

A recent study conducted on 99 participants with overweight and obesity showed that restricting the eating window to eight hours a day can be an effective strategy for weight control. The results were presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Malaga. Participants following this regimen were able not only to lose weight but also to maintain it over a long period, highlighting the importance of this approach.

The study showed that regardless of whether participants chose a morning or evening eight-hour eating window, adherence to the regimen for three months led to significant weight loss. The lead author of the study, Dr. Alba Camacho-Cardenas from the University of Granada, noted that the effects of this approach last for at least a year, making it promising for individuals looking to control their weight.

In the study, participants were divided into four groups, each following different dietary regimes. All participants also received recommendations for a Mediterranean diet, which facilitated a transition to healthier eating. After 12 weeks, participants following the time-restricted eating pattern lost an average of 3-4 kg, while those who ate for more than 12 hours lost only 1.4 kg.

Study Results

Additionally, participants following the time-restricted eating pattern showed a more significant reduction in waist and hip circumference. This indicates that this approach may be more effective not only for weight loss but also for improving overall health. A year after the start of the study, participants who followed the eight-hour eating pattern maintained most of the weight they lost, confirming the long-term effectiveness of the method.

Dr. Jonathan Ruiz, the study coordinator, emphasized that this type of intermittent fasting could be a practical option for adults with overweight or obesity. He noted that this approach allows for weight control without the need for daily calorie counting, making it more accessible to a wider audience.

However, despite the encouraging results, the study has not yet undergone independent peer review, and its preliminary findings require further confirmation. This highlights the need for larger studies that could validate the effectiveness of this method in the long term.

Long-term effects and adherence to the regimen

Dr. Maria Chondronikola from the University of Cambridge also called for further investigation into this approach. She noted that it is important to determine how accurately participants adhered to the established meal times and how many calories they consumed. This will help to more accurately assess the real effectiveness of the regimen and its impact on metabolic indicators related to obesity.

An important aspect of the study is that about 85-88% of participants following a time-restricted regimen were able to adhere to the proposed schedule. This suggests that such an approach can be not only effective but also relatively simple to implement in everyday life.

The comparison of results between groups also showed that participants who chose their meal times independently maintained some of the weight they lost; however, this result was not statistically significant. This highlights the importance of adhering to a clear regimen to achieve the best results in weight loss.

The need for further research

The study also raises questions about how various factors, such as meal timing and diet type, may interact with each other. For example, the Mediterranean diet recommended to participants may further contribute to weight loss and improved health.

Against the backdrop of the growing obesity problem in the world, the results of this study may represent an important step towards developing more effective weight control strategies. However, as experts emphasize, it is necessary to consider the individual characteristics of each person and their lifestyle.

In conclusion, while the results of the study are encouraging, it is important to remember that more data and research are needed for definitive conclusions. This will allow for a more accurate assessment of how effective time-restricted eating can be for different population groups and under various conditions.
