- Sam Neill, who passed away in July, was also in the cast.
- Dichen Lachman and Yvonne Strahovski received roles for female characters.
- The premiere is scheduled for April 30, 2027.
The collaboration between Sony and Nintendo has led to the creation of the first large-scale film adaptation of the popular video game 'The Legend of Zelda'. According to Deadline, key names have already been revealed for the central roles in the project, set to premiere on April 30, 2027.
The main antagonist of the series will be Ganondorf – a character portrayed by Australian actor Uli Latukefu. Latukefu is known for the Netflix series 'Marco Polo' and for playing young Dwayne Johnson in the show 'Young Rock'. Rumor has it that the actor has signed a contract covering multiple films, which may indicate plans to extend the 'Zelda' universe into several parts.
The project also includes Sam Neill, known for 'Jurassic Park', the sci-fi thriller 'Event Horizon', and the series 'Peaky Blinders'. Neill passed away on July 13 at the age of 78, and filming for the movie wrapped up in April, so his participation will be one of the last in his film career. Details about the actor's specific role have not yet been disclosed.
The female cast features Dichen Lachman and Yvonne Strahovski. Lachman, known for 'Severance' and 'Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom', will play the role of Impa – the mentor and protector of Princess Zelda. Strahovski, famous for 'The Handmaid's Tale' and her role as Miranda Lawson in 'Mass Effect', will portray a certain queen, the details of which remain a secret.
The leading roles of Link and Zelda will be played by Benjamin Ainsworth and Bo Bragason, respectively. The project is directed by Wes Ball, who previously directed the 'Maze Runner' film trilogy and 'Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom'. His experience in creating large-scale fantasy worlds promises to give the adaptation visual and narrative depth.
Context and significance of the project
The emergence of a live-action adaptation of 'Zelda' marks an important step in Nintendo's strategy to expand its media presence beyond video games. The joint project with Sony opens new opportunities for international distribution and financing, as well as raises the question of how to adapt the rich gaming material for a broad cinematic audience.
For the Ukrainian audience, the news is interesting because large Western companies continue to invest in cultural projects despite the current geopolitical challenges. The positive response from international viewers may help strengthen cultural ties and support the Ukrainian creative sector.
Considering that the film will be released in 2027, expectations for the casting and production remain high. We can only wait for the official trailers and more detailed information about the plot to assess how well the adaptation can convey the spirit of the original game.
