During the largest gaming exhibition Tokyo Game Show 2026, the Japanese developer ArtPlay presented the gameplay trailer for its new installment in the Bloodstained series – The Scarlet Engagement. The publication was live-streamed, and the short video quickly became a topic of discussion among fans of the metroidvania genre.
Visual design and gameplay
The trailer showcases meticulously crafted locations: dark corridors, halls with high arches, and, most importantly, a huge ethereal castle that, according to the developers, combines gothic architecture with fantastic elements. The screen also displays various abilities of the two protagonists, allowing the player to navigate complex platforming sections and battle hordes of monsters.
New Heroes
The main characters are the young church hunter Leonard Brandon and the royal knight Alexander Kyteler. Leonard possesses sacred artifacts capable of banishing demons, while Alexander wields swords enhanced with magic and has close combat skills. Both heroes can combine their abilities, unlocking new tactical possibilities.
The plot takes players to 16th century England, where a mysterious ethereal castle suddenly appeared, inhabited by various creatures from the otherworld. The locals were thrown into a panic, and the castle's emergence became the source of unexplained disappearances and attacks.
Leonard and Alexander join forces to explore the castle's intricate corridors, uncover its secrets, and reach the central hall, where the demon lord Elias awaits them. According to the developers, the final battle will require players to skillfully use both sets of abilities, as well as solve puzzles embedded in the castle's architecture.
The project is positioned as a prequel to the popular Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, known as the 'Amazing' part of the series. Although the events take place before the original game's storyline, new characters and locations expand the mythology of the Bloodstained universe, offering a fresh perspective on the familiar world.
Release date and platforms
Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement is scheduled for release in 2027. The game will be available on PC via Steam, as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. The developers have paid special attention to localization – the release will feature a complete Russian text version, which is important for the Russian-speaking audience.
For fans of the series, the announcement has generated great interest: new gameplay features, an expanded storyline, and the promise of high-quality graphics make the project one of the most anticipated releases of 2027. ArtPlay has also promised to support the game with post-release updates and additional content, which should keep players' interest for a long time.
