The game that started Bohemia Interactive and, in essence, the entire military simulator genre on PC. 1985, fictional islands, Soviet troops cross the border — and the player finds themselves as a regular infantryman, with no enemy map, no companion, and no room for error. The shock of 2001 was in the scale: the island existed in its entirety, reaching the objective required traveling several kilometers in real time in the back of a truck, and a sniper could take you out from a distance where you couldn't physically see them. One bullet kills — that's the entire health system. The campaign is structured so that the hero changes roles: today you're in a trench, tomorrow you're at the controls of a tank or in a helicopter cockpit, and each vehicle is taken seriously. Plus, a mission editor that created a huge community around the game. After a fallout with the publisher, the studio went on to create the ArmA series, while Codemasters kept the name.
