Diddy Kong Racing is that case where a kart racing game unexpectedly turned into an adventure. Rare created a hub island where players can freely drive around, opening doors to tracks, collecting balloons as currency, and facing bosses that must be beaten one-on-one. There are three types of vehicles: car, hovercraft, and airplane — and this is not just a skin choice, but different physics, because the flying stages are set in three dimensions, and the hovercraft reluctantly brakes and glides on water. Weapons are not picked up randomly: balloons of the same color accumulate and enhance a specific move, so the player decides what to invest in. Additionally, there are silver coins, a second difficulty level for tracks, and a final boss that requires replaying everything. And a separate line in history: it was here that Banjo and Conker first appeared, who later went on to have their own games.
