ArmA 2 is remembered for two things, and the second turned out to be more important than the first. Formally, it is a military simulator about a fictional post-Soviet Chernarus — a map the size of a small district, where battles unfold at real distances, a squad leads through the forest by azimuth, and a tank takes you out from a hill that you can't reach. The game was heavy in every sense at launch: demanding, inconvenient, rife with bugs, with an interface that scared off casual players within the first minute. It was valued for its scale and freedom — you could get into anything, from a truck to a helicopter. And then Dean Hall made the DayZ mod for it: the same forests and villages, zombies, hunger, and other players you couldn't trust — and the mod suddenly became a phenomenon, pulling the sales of the old game to the top of the charts and spawning an entire survival genre. Few modifications have changed the industry so much.
