The convict is released from prison after serving fourteen years, and the first thing he does is find the lawyer who once defended him. Not for a direct revenge: he appears near the lawyer's family, always within the law, always a little closer than yesterday, and the police can do nothing to help. 'Cape Fear' (1991) is a remake of a sixties thriller that Martin Scorsese took on, and he shifted the focus: the victim here is not flawless, and the fear grows from the fact that the hero himself once cheated. Robert De Niro brought his Max Cady to a state of almost biblical retribution, and it is his performance that made the film what it became. Scorsese shoots with an openly nervous style — sharp angles, the unsettling music of Bernard Herrmann from the original — and turns the family home into a place where it is no longer safe anywhere.
