Boston, Irish mafia and state police. The gangsters have their man in the department, and the department has its man in the gang. Both sides know about the existence of a rat and understand that you can only find the outsider without giving yourself away — and from that moment on, 'The Departed' (2006) unfolds like a tightening noose. Martin Scorsese adapted the Hong Kong film 'Infernal Affairs', moved it to the city he knows best, and added what was missing in the original: Catholic guilt, father figures, a conversation about who you become when you play someone else's role for too long. It was for this film that Scorsese finally received the directing Oscar, and the film took home the top statue. The cast here works at full strength, but Jack Nicholson's performance as the mob boss is particularly memorable — charming just enough to make you truly uneasy.
