1954, an island in the bay, a mental institution for criminally insane patients, from where a patient has disappeared without a trace. Two federal marshals arrive to investigate the escape, a storm is approaching, the ferry back is not running, and the staff answers questions too smoothly. 'Shutter Island' (2010) directed by Martin Scorsese is a love letter to gothic suspense: it features Hitchcock, old films about madness, and post-war fears — Dachau, lobotomy, the Cold War. The atmosphere thickens to almost physical suffocation, and the further it goes, the harder it is to understand where the investigation ends and something else begins. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a man whose past does not let him go for a moment. This is one of those films that looks completely different on a second viewing — and it's better to let it work on its own, without hints.
