The summer of 2016 was perhaps the only instance in history when a mobile game drove millions of people out onto the streets. Pokémon GO from Niantic overlays the game onto a real map: Pokémon appear near you, PokéStops are tied to actual landmarks and entrances, and to hatch an egg, you have to honestly walk kilometers. Technically, the studio built it on the data from its previous game Ingress and cartography, adding augmented reality through the phone's camera. The phenomenon went beyond the game: crowds at attractions, news about people wandering where they shouldn't, and debates about whether it's appropriate to catch Pokémon in a temple. The hype has long since died down, but the game is alive and being updated: raids, communities, seasonal events. It's free to play, with in-app purchases. And a fair warning: the battery drains quickly, and you have to watch your step.
