Spotify (2008)

Spotify launched in 2008 with a response to piracy that no one had been able to articulate before: making legal listening more convenient than downloading. It worked — and the model of 'all music for a subscription' became the norm for the entire industry. What distinguishes the service is not the catalog (which is roughly the same for everyone), but the recommendations: a weekly mix of unfamiliar but suitable tracks, radio for any song, and playlists that truly match the mood. Plus, there is a huge library of podcasts and synchronization between phone, computer, speaker, and console. A free tier exists, but it comes with ads and limitations on mobile; Premium removes these and allows downloading tracks to the device. The service pays artists a little, and this has long been a point of contention. For the Russian reader, it is important to note: since 2022, Spotify has ceased operations in Russia. Alternatives include Yandex Music, VK Music, Apple Music, and Deezer.
