A woman survives a car accident on Mulholland Drive and loses her memory. Another woman, who has just arrived in Los Angeles with a dream of cinema, takes it upon herself to help her figure out who she is. Thus begins the investigation — and it soon stops working by the rules, because this is David Lynch. "Mulholland Drive" (2001) grew out of an unproduced television pilot, and the strange origin story benefited the film: it is structured like a dream, where logic exists but belongs to a waking consciousness. Here, Hollywood is depicted as a factory grinding people, and the genre detective framework serves as a frame for something much more unsettling. The film earned Lynch the Best Director award at Cannes and has since regularly topped lists of the best films of the 21st century. It does not provide ready answers — and in this lies its long life.
