Resident Evil 2 Remake surpassed the 20 million copies sold milestone

- The RE2 remake has sold over 20 million copies since 2019
- The second best-selling game in Capcom's history
- Available on PC, consoles, and mobile platforms
- The version for Nintendo Switch 2 will be released on October 16
Capcom announced a new achievement for its popular remake of Resident Evil 2. Since its release in January 2019, the game has sold over 20 million copies, becoming one of the most successful projects in the company's history.
An impressive result has been achieved due to the wide availability of the product. The remake has been released on multiple platforms: personal computers via Steam, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, iOS mobile devices, and a cloud service for Nintendo Switch. Soon, on October 16, a full port for Nintendo Switch 2 will be released, which will further expand the game's audience.
The actual player base significantly exceeds the figure of 20 million, as Resident Evil 2 Remake was included in the libraries of subscription services Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, allowing millions of users to experience the remake without a separate purchase. Capcom's previous report from August of this year indicated 19.7 million units sold as of June 30.
This achievement is of fundamental importance for the Resident Evil series. The 2019 remake has become not only the best-selling game in the franchise but also the second most successful game in the entire Capcom company, surpassed only by Monster Hunter: World with its colossal sales.
The impact on the development of the series
The success of the Resident Evil 2 remake became a catalyst for reviving interest in remakes of classic games in the series. Riding on this success, Capcom released the Resident Evil 3 remake and reissued Resident Evil 4 with updated mechanics and graphics. Similar re-releases have appeared in neighboring franchises: Dead Space received its remake in 2023, and Silent Hill 2 was remade long ago.
