In brief
  • The game immerses players in the worlds of famous paintings without time limits.
  • The main character travels with a wolf and an owl, devoid of memory.
  • Ten locations: Van Gogh, Monet, Klimt, and others.

The Japanese publishing company Kodansha and the independent studio Mana have announced the release of a new project CaTHaRSiS: The Last of Atelier. This is an adventure game where players literally find themselves inside famous paintings, gaining the ability to move freely through their spaces.

The main character is a faceless form without memories. Together with two companions – a wolf and an owl – he embarks on a journey through ten artistic worlds, trying to recover lost fragments of memory.

Each location is inspired by a specific work: among them are 'Starry Night', 'Café Terrace at Night', and 'Sunflowers' by Vincent van Gogh, 'Woman with a Parasol' by Claude Monet, as well as the famous 'The Kiss' by Gustav Klimt. The developers promise that the visual stylization will be as close to the originals as possible, and atmospheric details – from the wind to the light – will be interactive.

In the world of Monet, players will be able to run through a sun-drenched green meadow, while the space based on Klimt's 'The Kiss' will immerse the hero in a golden, almost shimmering environment. Van Gogh's paintings will reveal a deep blue sky and bright sunflowers to the player, creating a sense of living painting.

A feature of the project is the absence of strict challenges: there is no possibility of losing in the game and no time limits. This allows players to explore each episode at their own pace, enjoying the artistic component without pressure.

The developers estimated the duration of completing all ten episodes to be roughly the same as watching a feature film, making the game suitable for a calm yet extended immersion.

CaTHaRSiS will be available exclusively on the Steam platform for personal computers. Currently, there are no official announcements regarding a Russian localization, but the game promises a wide international reach.

The project fits into the growing trend of games that use art as the basis for gameplay and can provide an interesting experience for both painting enthusiasts and players seeking unconventional, atmospheric adventures.
