A story that could not be invented: during the takeover of the American embassy in Tehran, several diplomats managed to escape and hide, and the idea to extract them was conceived under the guise of a film crew for a nonexistent sci-fi movie. Ben Affleck as a director holds two tones simultaneously and does not let them interfere with each other. One is a dry political thriller: a foreign city, every document scrutinized, every passport check like a noose. The second is a dark Hollywood comedy about how in Los Angeles they seriously create a fake project with storyboards, casting, and a press presentation, because otherwise the legend won't hold up. The intersection of these worlds is the main trick of 'Argo': while the producers joke about the script, in Tehran lives depend on that script. The film won an Oscar for Best Picture and revived interest in adult thrillers made without special effects.
