Formally, this is a superhero movie; in fact, it is a crime drama set in a big city, filmed according to the laws of neo-noir. Gotham in Nolan's vision looks for the first time not like a gothic fantasy, but like a real metropolis with its prosecutor's office, police, and mafia, and the conflict revolves around a simple question: what to do when you face an opponent who has nothing to lose and nothing to demand. The Joker was played by Heath Ledger—a performance that immediately transcended the genre and earned him a posthumous Oscar; his character is dangerous not by strength, but by the fact that every move he makes puts good people in a position where, after making a choice, they will no longer be good. Nolan shot part of the scenes on IMAX film, rejecting the usual comic book aesthetic in favor of a heavy, almost documentary weight. It was after 'The Dark Knight' that superhero movies stopped being perceived as attractions for teenagers.
