FIFA 23 has gone down in history as the last game in the series under this name — EA's contract with the federation was expiring, and this was essentially the farewell release of the brand. In terms of sports, it focused on HyperMotion technology in its second iteration: animations were captured from matches of real teams, which is why players noticeably step, stop, and fall differently, and the ball behaves heavier. Notable features include revamped free kicks and penalties aimed from the player, rather than from a menu, and powerful long shots, around which a new meta-style quickly formed. Women's football made its debut at the club league level, not just national teams. Additionally, cross-platform matches, which the series had been waiting for years, were introduced. The main driver here remains the same: Ultimate Team with packs, auctions, and ongoing debates about the cost of a competitive squad. Career mode and Volta were traditionally updated on a residual basis.
