Frank Herbert's novel was considered unfilmable, and there was a history behind this reputation: too much politics, ecology, religion, and internal monologues. Denis Villeneuve solved the problem simply — he took only the first half of the book and let it breathe. "Dune" (2021) tells the story of the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of spice, and of the family sent there to govern, fully aware that it is a trap. Villeneuve conveys scale not through quantity, but through silence and pauses: ships hang in the frame like a weather phenomenon, Hans Zimmer's sound physically overwhelms, and the desert appears not as a backdrop, but as a character. The film is cautious with the messianic theme of the source material — here it is presented as dangerous rather than heroic. The result is a rare case where an expensive blockbuster science fiction film turned out to be slow, serious, and mature.
