TikTok changed not the video, but the way it is shown. Before it, the feed was built from what you were subscribed to; here the algorithm from the first minute offers videos from strangers and adjusts the presentation based on what you watched to the end and what you swiped away. As a result, a creator can gain an audience without a single subscriber — and this has overturned the rules for everyone, including Instagram and YouTube, which quickly copied the format of vertical short videos. Launched in 2016, the service provides a built-in editor with music, effects, duets, and voiceovers: you can shoot with your phone without learning anything. There are two sides to this, and both are adult: the feed is designed so that you cannot stop, and questions about data collection and the jurisdiction of the owner have led to restrictions in several countries. In Russia, the publication of new videos has been restricted since 2022.
