Los Angeles in 2019, as seen in 1982: eternal rain, advertisements the size of houses, neon in the smog, and a city where the sky is not visible from the streets. A retired police officer is brought back to service to track down escaped replicants — artificial people indistinguishable from real ones and very unwilling to die on schedule. Ridley Scott's 'Blade Runner' flopped at the box office and only later became a canon that defined the appearance of cyberpunk for decades to come: almost everything we consider the visual language of the genre stems from here. The detective plot based on Philip K. Dick's novel serves as a pretext for a question that the film does not answer — what distinguishes a human from their copy if the copy fears death more. Rutger Hauer's final monologue is known by heart, and it is worth it.
