Mario Kart World was released alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 and has become the largest overhaul of the formula for the series in decades. The tracks no longer float in emptiness as separate pieces: they are connected by a shared world, and between cup races, racers travel on real roads, highways, and backroads, making the journey from one point to another just as much a part of the race as the lap itself. Hence, free-roaming on the map, searching for shortcuts and cut-throughs that no one has marked. The piloting remains recognizable: drifting with charged boosts, shells and bananas, automatic balancing that ensures the leader gets hit on the last turn. But the races have become noticeably more crowded and chaotic, and tricks on walls and rails have added verticality. As always with Nintendo, it plays equally easily with a child and with a group of adults, who will ultimately argue over the blue shell.
