Google Maps has long ceased to be a map in the old sense — it is more of a directory of everything that has an address. Since 2005, the service has gathered in one place the road map of almost the entire planet, satellite images, Street View panoramas, millions of organizations with reviews, photos, hours of operation, and traffic patterns by day. Hence the main advantage over local competitors — coverage: in an unfamiliar country, this is usually the first thing you open. Navigation works for cars, walking, cycling, and public transport with schedules, there are offline maps that can be downloaded in advance — a trick that saves you in roaming. Traffic data is collected from users' phones. The payment is familiar: the service knows where you have been and keeps this in your location history. In Russian cities, Yandex Maps and 2GIS are usually more accurate in detailing courtyards and organizations. An open alternative is OpenStreetMap.
