The United States celebrates the anniversary of Independence Day. And one of the most famous anti-war activists in American history – Ron Kovic – turns 80.
In the 1960s, young Kovic volunteered for the Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam. He sustained a serious injury and was paralyzed from the waist down.
Disillusioned with his former ideals, he joined the anti-war movement. He was arrested twelve times for participating in protests and once interrupted a public speech by Richard Nixon.
The autobiography of Kovic 'Born on the Fourth of July' became a bestseller. Its film adaptation starring Tom Cruise won two 'Oscars' and four 'Golden Globes'.
Current U.S. President Donald Trump is the same age as Ron Kovic, having been born a few weeks earlier. But his life path turned out to be quite different.
