The most inconvenient part of the trilogy: it has neither a beginning nor an end — it consists entirely of the middle. Jackson separates the heroes into three lines and edits them in parallel, so the film is always moving, going nowhere: one group trudges towards a foreign border, another wanders through the steppe, and the third finds itself in an ancient forest. Everything relies on two things. The first is Gollum, played by Andy Serkis: not a special effect with lines, but a character with real acting work inside, and his split argument with himself is the strongest scene of the film. The second is Helm's Deep, a night siege in the rain, where Jackson shifts from adventure to war cinema: fatigue, hopelessness, running out of arrows. 'The Two Towers' is remembered as the moment when the fairy tale became dark and the trilogy stopped being just a journey.
