In brief
  • Honda has announced the concept of a mountain electric bicycle e‑MTB.
  • The model combines motorcycle style and electric support.
  • The serial production is scheduled for 2027, with sales in 2025.
  • The price will be premium, with competition intensified by Rivian TM‑B.

The Japanese manufacturer Honda has announced its entry into the high-tech active leisure segment, presenting the concept of a mountain electric bicycle (e‑MTB) at the Sea Otter Europe exhibition. According to a company representative, the project aims to provide a feeling close to riding a motorcycle while maintaining the joy of riding on rough terrain.

The bike features a massive, specially designed frame made of thin-walled aluminum and a rear swingarm suspension styled after motorcycle chassis. This design gives the bicycle a futuristic appearance and enhances comfort on uneven trails.

The first public showing of the model took place in 2023 at the Japan Mobility Show, where it was equipped with Fox shock absorbers and Maxxis tires. Subsequent demonstrations in 2024 used DT Swiss wheels and Schwalbe Tacky Chan tires, aimed at downhill.

Exact technical specifications, price, and delivery times have not yet been announced; however, the company positions the e-MTB as a premium product, which implies a high cost. Series production is expected to begin in 2025, with the first deliveries occurring in 2027, primarily for the European market.

This initiative continues Honda's recent strategy in the electric vehicle sector. Last year, the company released the WN7 electric motorcycle with a range of up to 140 km, which received a design award and is already being sold in the UK and several other countries for around £12,999 (approximately $17,370).

Competition in the e-bike segment

Other automakers have recently entered the electric bicycle market. For example, the American company Rivian has created a separate brand for its versatile electric bike TM-B, the base version of which costs $4,000, and for an additional $500, you can get the Performance model with an improved fork and increased motor assistance ratio. Sales are scheduled for November of this year.

Honda's entry into the e-MTB segment expands options for consumers looking for a combination of speed, comfort, and eco-friendliness. The emergence of a premium product could accelerate infrastructure development and increase competition, ultimately making high-tech active transportation more accessible.
