HDMI 2.2 supports 4K 240Hz, 8K 60Hz, and up to 16K with compression.
Silkland has announced the start of pre-orders for the new HDMI 2.2 Ultra96 cable line (H96 series). These are the first certified products available to the public that can transmit data at speeds up to 96 Gbps – twice the maximum bandwidth of Ultra High Speed cables using HDMI 2.1.
Specifications and prices
H96 cables are offered in two lengths – 2 and 3 meters. Both models have undergone separate certification under the HDMI Ultra Cable program and carry the official Ultra96 marking. A QR code is placed on the label, allowing verification of the product's authenticity through the official HDMI website. The price of the two-meter cable starts at $32.99.
Orders are already being accepted, but deliveries are planned in batches, the first of which will be shipped on October 5.
What's new in HDMI 2.2
HDMI 2.2 introduces the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), allowing devices to exchange information about signal delay for better audio and video synchronization. Additionally, it retains features like VRR, ALLM, QFT, QMS, Dynamic HDR, and eARC.
The cables are compatible with older HDMI devices; however, to operate at full speed of 96 Gbps, equipment supporting HDMI 2.2 is required.
Competitors and the market
The Japanese company ELECOM announced its HDMI 2.2 Ultra96 cables on September 8, claiming to be the first certified products of this type in Japan. Their release is scheduled for mid-November, while Silkland opened pre-orders on September 14.
Current Nvidia GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards (including RTX 5090), AMD Radeon RX 9000, and Intel Arc B only support HDMI 2.1b. Support for HDMI 2.2 is expected in the next generation of graphics processors. Rumor has it that AMD's GFX13 architecture (RDNA 5) will work with HDMI 2.2 but will limit bandwidth to 64–80 Gbps, not reaching the maximum of the standard. Nvidia has not yet confirmed that its future RTX 60 will feature HDMI 2.2.
Thus, the emergence of certified Ultra96 cables paves the way for utilizing the new capabilities of HDMI 2.2; however, widespread adoption will depend on the availability of compatible equipment.
