The renowned indie studio Double Fine has announced the revival of its signature game marathon Amnesia Fortnight. The event, named after the traditional two-week hackathon, is planned for the first time after a five-year break – the last time the team held it was in 2019.

The History of Amnesia Fortnight

Originally, Amnesia Fortnight emerged in 2009 as an internal experiment, where developers gathered in a closed setting to create prototypes of new games in two weeks. Later, the format was opened to the public, allowing fans to submit their concepts and influence the studio's development. Since then, the hackathon has become a symbol of Double Fine's creative approach to indie development.

The new cycle of Amnesia Fortnight starts on August 31 and will last exactly two weeks. During this period, anyone interested can present their ideas and vote for already proposed concepts. Voting will take place online, and each participant will have the opportunity to cast their vote for the project they believe deserves further development.

After the voting concludes, the Double Fine team will select the four most popular ideas and turn them into prototypes. The developers promise that each prototype will receive full technical support, as well as creative oversight from experienced studio staff. Based on the prototypes received, one project will be chosen to have the chance to become a small but complete game project.

The selected project will be implemented over the course of several months, after which it will receive a public release in the form of a limited version or demo game. Double Fine plans to maintain communication with the community and regularly inform about progress, allowing fans to follow the development of their idea from concept to finished product.

The revival of Amnesia Fortnight is seen as an attempt to strengthen the dialogue between developers and their audience, as well as to demonstrate that even large studios can experiment in the format of an open creative competition. For the industry, this is an example of how collaborative efforts can generate new game concepts without significant financial investment.

The event is expected to attract the attention of both dedicated Double Fine fans and independent developers eager to see how their ideas can come to life. According to studio representatives, Amnesia Fortnight will serve as a platform for discovering fresh talent and new directions in game design.
