Ubisoft announced the closure of the tactical RPG Champions Tactics

- Ubisoft is closing Champions Tactics on October 30, 2026.
- The game used NFT characters traded for cryptocurrency.
- In-game purchases are disabled on all platforms.
- The developers promise to inform players about further steps.
In early October 2024, Ubisoft introduced Champions Tactics — a tactical role-playing game with turn-based battles, where players form a squad of three heroes. The main distinction of the project was the integration of NFTs: each character represented a unique digital asset that could be purchased, sold, or exchanged for in-game currency and cryptocurrency.
The game quickly attracted attention from both supporters of new technologies and critics, who pointed out the risks associated with blockchain mechanics and the potential for increased monetization. Although Champions Tactics retained traditional gameplay mechanics, the ability to trade heroes as NFT tokens sparked controversy within the gaming community.
Abandoning blockchain
In May of this year, Ubisoft announced a gradual abandonment of blockchain technologies in the project. The developers stated that they plan to reduce features related to NFTs and focus on classic gameplay. However, just a few months later, the company decided to completely shut down support for Champions Tactics.
In an official address to players, Ubisoft clarified that the servers will operate until October 30, 2026, after which the game will become unavailable. In-game purchases have been disabled on all platforms, and users will be able to continue accessing the available content without restrictions.
The developers thanked the community for their participation in the project and promised to provide additional information as the server shutdown date approaches. According to them, further steps will be aimed at minimizing inconveniences for players who remain in the game.
Context and consequences
The Champions Tactics project became one of the most notable examples of a major publisher's attempt to integrate NFTs into mainstream gaming products. After mixed reviews and a decline in interest in blockchain games in the industry, Ubisoft, like other companies, has reevaluated its strategy in this area.
The closure of the project reflects a growing skepticism regarding the commercialization of gaming worlds through NFTs and cryptocurrencies. For players who have already invested time and resources into digital assets, the end of support may be a financial and emotional blow; however, the company emphasized that further transactions are no longer possible.
Thus, Ubisoft concludes its experiment with the NFT game, taking away experiences that will likely be considered in the development of future projects, where traditional gameplay without excessive monetization will be a priority.
