The book from 1970 starts almost like a cool detective story: a man wakes up in a hospital, remembers nothing, realizes that he is being held here for a reason, and leaves, bluffing at every step. He pieces himself together along with the reader — and gradually it becomes clear that he is one of the princes of Amber, the only real city, while all other worlds, including ours, are just its shadows. Zelazny narrates in the first person, briefly and boldly, with an American conversational tone that surprisingly blends well with royal intrigues. Hence the charm: godly relatives fight for the throne like an ordinary dysfunctional family, and no one can be trusted. The idea of Reflections — worlds through which one can travel, changing reality with a turn of thought — turned out to be one of the most contagious in fantasy. The first volume is short and ends at the most interesting point.
