NASA is the owner of the most fantastic collection of images of Earth from space. In late April 2009, NASA's Earth Observatory celebrated its tenth anniversary.
In its blog, the observatory published hundreds of photographs showing changes on Earth that have occurred over the last 10 years in honor of the celebration.
Below is a collection of the best photos of Earth from space from the observatory's website.
The delta of the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar. About 60% of the rice in the country is grown in four states located in the Irrawaddy delta.
Lagoons and reefs of New Caledonia, July 2008.
Wheat, rye, and sorghum fields in Kansas. Reminds of a piece of modern art.
Nukuro Atoll is one of the 607 islands that make up the Federated States of Micronesia.
The Huayhuash mountain range, Peruvian Andes. The photo was taken from the ISS at 100 km above Earth.
Swirling sediment in the bay. This is not visible from space, but such eddies are a sign that the ocean is restless. Strong winds and waves cause sediment to rise to the surface. Fine sediment – rocks ground to powder by glaciers – flows into the ocean along with river water.
The five-kilometer Deriba crater. A young geological formation located in the Marra Mountains of Sudan.
Sand dunes in Marquze, Libya.
Crowds of people in Washington on the inauguration day of the forty-fourth president of the USA, January 20, 2009. Photo from the GeoEye-1 satellite.
Antarctica. A relatively small number of people have seen Antarctica. Until the early 19th century, this icy desert, hostile to any life, was a myth.
Alaska, August 23, 2008. Not a single cloud obscures Alaska, which is beginning to take on autumn colors.
Uluru, Australia. This is a giant oval rock 348 meters high and 3.6 km long. The rock is covered with inscriptions and drawings, and the Aboriginal people traditionally perform various rituals near it.
South Island, New Zealand.
Piton de la Fournaise, an active volcano in the southeastern part of Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean.
Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in Oregon.
Dust from the United Arab Emirates over the Persian Gulf, late February 2009. The wind carried dust and sand at a speed of 65 kilometers per hour, with air temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius.
