In brief
  • Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 will be released on September 9.
  • The appearance will change little, but there will be ceramics.
  • The new S11 chip will enhance the performance of the watches.
  • Health and fitness monitoring features will expand.

On September 9, Apple will hold an online event called Surprise and Shine, where, in addition to the anticipated iPhone 18 Pro and the first foldable iPhone, it will announce the updated Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. This was reported by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who gained access to preliminary materials.

The design will remain familiar

Gurman emphasizes that the external design of the new models will not differ from the current Series 11 and Ultra 3. However, Apple, according to him, will resume the production of a version with a ceramic case in the Series 12 lineup. Prototypes have already been tested in white and dark gray variants – the material resembles the ceramic that was planned for use in Series 3 in 2017.

Among the rumors is a strap with a built-in health sensor, but Gurman did not confirm this detail and focused on more significant changes.

New chip and performance increase

Series 11 and Ultra 3 run on the S10 chip, which was also used in Series 10 and Ultra 2. It is expected that the new models will feature the S11 or a more advanced version, marking the first noticeable increase in computing power for the Apple Watch in several years.

Increased performance should support new features, including continuous heart rate data collection throughout the day. According to Gurman, Apple is testing this capability, which will allow for more accurate tracking of cardiometric data without the need for manual measurements.

Expanded set of health metrics

The company plans to add more wellness-related metrics to the 'Health' and 'Fitness' apps, focusing on popular services like Whoop and Oura. This may include recovery assessment, heart rate variability, and other parameters sought after by athletes and users monitoring their condition.

It is noted separately that there will be no Apple Watch SE 4 released this year. According to Gurman, Apple is already working on a major redesign of the watch, but a finished version is expected only in one to two years.

Finally, as part of its long-term strategy, the company continues research on the function of measuring blood glucose levels, which they plan to bring to market by 2030. This technology could open new opportunities for people with diabetes and strengthen Apple's position in the medical wearable devices segment.
