Joseph Fiennes plays a man tormented by the fear of God's wrath and outraged by the sale of indulgences, while Alfred Molina plays the cynical preacher Tetzel. The film takes the viewer from Wittenberg to the Diet of Worms and the translation of the Bible into German, in one of Peter Ustinov's last screen appearances.
