Comparison of USB-C cables: price and quality

A recent study conducted by Lumafield showed that two externally identical USB-C cables can have completely different technical specifications. Starting from December 2024, all new devices, including smartphones and tablets, sold in the European Union must be equipped with a USB-C port. This decision is the result of years of efforts to standardize chargers, and even Apple, which had long resisted this standard, has begun transitioning to USB-C. However, this has not made Apple cables more affordable.

Apple's Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable, measuring 1.8 meters, costs $129, which is significantly higher than the prices of most similar accessories. This cable is designed for high-speed data transfer and connecting demanding equipment. While many USB-C cables can be purchased for just a few dollars, Apple offers its products at significantly higher prices, raising questions about the fairness of such costs.

The price difference between cables is explained by differences in charging and data transfer standards. For example, the NiceTQ cable for $5 promises charging power of up to 60W and data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps, but in practice, its capabilities are significantly lower. Research showed that out of the eight available contacts, only four are functional, limiting the data transfer speed to 480Mbps.

Variety of USB-C standards

On the other end of the spectrum is the Apple Thunderbolt 4 cable, which supports data transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps and charging power of up to 100W. X-ray images revealed that inside this cable is a complex design with 24 independent contacts and a ten-layer printed circuit board. This makes it more reliable and durable than cheaper models like the NiceTQ.

The Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable also features mechanical protection that reduces the risk of damage at connection points. This is an important aspect, especially for users who frequently plug and unplug cables. In contrast, the NiceTQ cable lacks such protection, making it more vulnerable to damage.

The study also included Amazon Basics and ATYFUER cables. Interestingly, the ATYFUER cable priced at $3.89 has a more complex internal structure than the more expensive NiceTQ model. This highlights that price is not always an indicator of the quality and reliability of a cable.

Technical differences between cables

It is important to note that not all users need high-quality cables. If you are using a cable only for charging a smartphone or occasional file transfers, a quality USB-C cable with the appropriate specifications will suffice. Expensive models are indeed useful for connecting high-speed drives and multiple monitors.

USB-C technology continues to evolve, and new models like Thunderbolt 5 offer even higher data transfer speeds and charging power. However, their cost can also be high, making the choice of cable even more complicated for consumers.

The main conclusion from the study is that not all USB-C cables are the same. Externally identical models may conceal completely different technologies and designs. This emphasizes the importance of making a conscious choice of cable based on your needs and budget.

Choosing a cable based on needs

Consumers should consider that expensive cables are not always the best. Certified models from other brands can provide comparable performance at a lower price. This is especially relevant for users who do not require high specifications.

Ultimately, the choice of a USB-C cable should be based on your specific needs. If you need a cable for charging and occasional data transfer, then there is no point in overpaying for additional features that you do not need.

Thus, the Lumafield study emphasizes the importance of understanding the differences between USB-C cables and taking a conscious approach to their selection. It is important to pay attention not only to the price but also to the technical specifications that can significantly affect the performance and durability of the cable.
