In brief
  • By moving one match, we change 1 + 8 = 7 to the correct equation
  • The task 7 − 9 + 2 = 1 is corrected by replacing 9 with 3
  • For 1 + 6 = 9, it is enough to turn 6 into 8 by moving a match

In recent years, visual puzzles made of matches have become increasingly popular. Their simple materialization and the ability to quickly check the solution attract both children and adults who want to entertain themselves while exercising their brains.

A new task from UNIAN

The Ukrainian information agency UNIAN has developed a series of short tasks where participants are asked to change one match to correct a mathematical equation. According to the authors, only a small percentage of people can complete it within the allotted five seconds.

The first of the presented puzzles looks like this: 1 + 8 = 7. At first glance, the equation is clearly incorrect, but it is enough to move the inner part of the digit '8' and place it above the digit '1'. As a result, we get the digit '7', and the equation turns into 7 + 8 = 15, which already complies with the rules of arithmetic.

The second task suggests correcting the equation 7 − 9 + 2 = 1. By moving one matchstick from the digit '9', it can be turned into '3', after which we get 7 − 3 + 2 = 6, which is also a correct equality.

The third puzzle consists of correcting the example 1 + 6 = 9. It is enough to take one matchstick from the digit '9' and attach it to the digit '6', turning it into '8'. We get 1 + 8 = 9, which is already correct.

All three tasks require only one movement of a piece, but at the same time test attentiveness, spatial imagination, and basic arithmetic skills. Such exercises are often used in educational programs to develop logical thinking.

According to research, regular engagement in visual puzzles enhances memory, speeds up information processing, and increases problem-solving abilities. Therefore, such 'matchstick' tasks can be a useful addition to traditional teaching methods.

If you want to test your abilities, try to solve the proposed equations in five seconds without using hints. Even if the first attempt is unsuccessful, repeated attempts will help refine your skills in quick analysis and precise manipulation of elements.
