Almost everything here is shot from a child's height — we see adults only from the waist up for a long time, and this is not a device for the sake of a device: 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' (1982) consciously refuses to look at the world through the eyes of those who make decisions. A boy from a suburban home, where a family has recently fallen apart, finds a creature accidentally left by its kind on Earth in a shed and hides it from his mother, neighbors, and the state. Steven Spielberg made a science fiction film in which the alien does not threaten but needs help — after decades of invasion movies, this was a revolution in itself. The film became the highest-grossing in the world and held that position for years, but it survived not because of that: it honestly speaks about childhood loneliness and about separation that one cannot prepare for. The silhouette of a bicycle against the moon has since become the logo of an entire studio and an entire era.
