The third film in the series is the turning point after which the Potterverse could no longer be called a children's fairy tale. Behind the camera, the person changed: instead of Columbus, the Mexican Alfonso Cuarón came, and Hogwarts changed physically — it became colder, rainier, overgrown with forest and mountains, and students began to wear their robes over regular clothes, like teenagers who were tired of uniforms. Cuarón captures not so much magic as anxiety: a dangerous prisoner has escaped from prison, creatures that suck joy are watching the school, and the hero has to deal not with a monster for the first time, but with his own fear and family history that no one has told him about. The magic here is mundane and slightly eerie, the humor is drier, and the ending is crafted more cleverly than in any other part. Many still consider 'The Prisoner of Azkaban' the best film in the series — largely due to how confidently it broke away from the tone of the previous ones.
