Discord was created for gamers: there was a need for a voice chat that doesn't eat up frames in the game, doesn't require server setup, and allows you to jump into a room with friends with one click. It turned out to be so convenient that it expanded beyond games — now there are study groups, open-source projects, design communities, and interest clubs. It is structured around servers: inside are text and voice channels, roles with permissions, moderation bots, and anything else, screen sharing and streams for friends. It appeared in 2015, is mostly free, and the paid subscription Nitro offers streaming quality, larger uploads, and cosmetics. Downsides: message history is closed off from search engines and only exists within the server, so knowledge in chats is lost; a large community without moderation quickly deteriorates. Work analogs are Slack and Mattermost, and open ones are Matrix and Revolt.
