In brief
  • Israel missed the match against the Netherlands due to Yom Kippur
  • The Netherlands won 4-0 after the refusal to reschedule the game
  • Israel's request to change the schedule was denied
  • Russia is not participating in the current Olympics

The sixth round of the World Chess Olympiad, held in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) from September 16 to 27, was without the participation of the Israeli team. The team did not show up for the scheduled match against the Netherlands, citing the national religious holiday - Yom Kippur.

Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar, requires complete abstention from work and public events. For this reason, representatives of Israel approached the tournament organizers with a request to adjust the schedule: they suggested playing an evening match after the holiday or moving it to the next day, which is considered a day off.

The request was rejected by the representatives of the Dutch team, who insisted on maintaining the original schedule. As a result, according to the rules of the Olympics, the Netherlands were declared the winners of the match with a score of 4:0, which was reflected in the final group table.

The situation was covered in the Telegram channel 'Chess Herald', where it was noted that such scheduling conflicts sometimes arise in international competitions when national or religious circumstances intersect with fixed tournament dates.

The organizers of the Olympics, acting under the auspices of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), did not make changes to the schedule, citing the need to maintain equal conditions for all participants. This decision highlights the difficulty of balancing between sports regulations and respect for the cultural peculiarities of the participating countries.

It is worth noting that in the current edition of the Olympics, Russia is officially not participating, which has already become a subject of wide discussion in the chess community. The absence of the Russian team has changed the competitive landscape of the tournament, opening up additional opportunities for other countries.

Context and significance

The World Chess Olympiad is considered one of the most prestigious team events in the chess world, gathering more than 150 national teams. Each round is crucial for the distribution of points that affect the final ranking of the participating country. Missing a match can significantly change a team's chances of advancing to the final stage of the tournament.

For Israel, missing one of the rounds reduced its chances of a higher position in the overall table, while for the Netherlands, an automatic victory strengthened their position in the group. Both results will be taken into account when forming the final rankings and distributing medals.
