In brief
  • Netflix and SEGA are jointly preparing three projects.
  • The movie 'Crazy Taxi' is a comedy from the writers of 'The Naked Gun'.
  • Films based on Stranger Than Heaven and a series about Sonic are planned.
  • Details are currently unknown, projects have only been approved.

Streaming giant Netflix has officially confirmed the launch of three new projects in partnership with Japanese game publisher SEGA. According to Variety, the companies have signed a deal to create two feature films based on a well-known arcade racing game. Crazy Taxi and on a lesser-known project Stranger Than Heaven, as well as an animated series based on a popular franchise Sonic the Hedgehog, aimed at a younger audience.

The movie 'Crazy Taxi' is a comedy from the writers of Naked Gun

The first of the planned projects will be a comedy film, the plot of which will be developed by the duo Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. The authors are known for their work on the film The Naked Gun, scheduled for release in 2025. The project's producers will be Neil H. Moritz and Toby Ascher from Original Film, as well as Tohru Nakahara representing SEGA.

According to Brandon Rigg, Vice President of Netflix responsible for documentary and transmedia projects, the current stage is just the approval of concepts. Therefore, details about the budget, casting, or shooting dates are not expected yet.

«Stranger Than Heaven» and an animated series about Sonic

The second film will be based on the game Stranger Than Heaven. There is currently no information about the plot details and creative team, however, the project is already included in the development plan for video game content on the Netflix platform.

The third point of collaboration is a new animated series set in the Sonic universe. Unlike previous adaptations, this series will be aimed at children, aligning with Netflix's overall strategy to expand family content. The series is expected to use modern animation technologies and familiar characters known to fans of the games and cartoons about the blue hedgehog.

The collaboration between Netflix and SEGA reflects the growing interest in transforming video games into cross-media formats. In recent years, the platform has already adapted projects such as The Witcher и Arcane, and SEGA, in turn, actively promotes its brands beyond the gaming industry.

For the Ukrainian audience, such initiatives are important because they demonstrate international support for cultural products created in countries where the industry faces external challenges. Attracting global players to local brands enhances their visibility and opens new opportunities for creative professionals.

So far, specific premiere dates have not been announced, but the announcement has already generated interest among fans and potential viewers. If the projects receive support, they could become another step in the development of a media ecosystem that unites games, cinema, and animation.
