The finale in which Jackson had to settle all accounts at once — and he settled them with a surplus. If the first part is about the road, and the second about war, then the third is about the price: almost every hero here reaches their limit and loses something, even when winning. The scale rises to the Pelennor Fields, where cavalry charges at siege engines, but the strongest scenes are surprisingly quiet — two weary travelers on a scorched slope, crawling with their last strength to a place from which they do not plan to return. A distinct feature of this part is the long, deliberately unhurried farewell at the very end: the film refuses to end on a victory and stays with the heroes until it becomes clear that not everyone returns home and not as they were. Eleven Oscars — a record result for its time — secured 'The Return of the King' the status of the pinnacle of the trilogy.
