Awakening (1990)

Based on the real records of neurologist Oliver Sacks. Robin Williams plays a shy doctor who, in the late 1960s, tries a new drug on patients who have been frozen in catatonia for decades after an epidemic of lethargic encephalitis — and they wake up. Robert De Niro as Leonard lives an entire life in just a few weeks, and that is what makes the film so heavy and so necessary. A rare case where the director's restraint is stronger than any pathos.
