WPS Office is older than it seems: the Chinese company Kingsoft started it back in 1988, long before Microsoft entered the local market. Today, it is a compact suite of a word processor, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDF handling, valued for two qualities — a familiar look and compatibility. The interface intentionally mimics the Office ribbon, so there's no need to adjust, and .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files open noticeably more accurately than in most free alternatives. It works on Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, and iOS, is lightweight, and launches quickly — the difference is noticeable on a weak laptop. A free version exists, but it comes with ads and limitations, with some features leading to a paid subscription and cloud. As for privacy, decide for yourself: the service is cloud-based and Chinese, and data passes through its servers. A completely free alternative is LibreOffice.
