This film marked the beginning of the entire Potterverse, and its task was simple: to convince the viewer that Hogwarts exists. Chris Columbus tackles it honestly and in detail — through the eyes of an eleven-year-old boy who yesterday slept in a cupboard, and today chooses a magic wand, gets sorted by the Sorting Hat, and sees the enchanted ceiling of the Great Hall for the first time. The plot intrigue with the hidden artifact in the school is almost a pretext: the main focus is the tour, the introduction to the rules, the staircases, the ghosts, and the owls. Hence the tone, the warmest and most fairy-tale-like in the entire series, still free of teenage anxiety. The film is also valuable for having found three children who would grow up on screen for a whole decade — a rare case where casting determined the fate of the franchise for years to come.
