Skype (2003)

Skype is a rare example of a product that won its era but did not survive the next. In 2003, it made the impossible commonplace: a free call across the ocean with video, over regular internet, with traffic flowing through a peer-to-peer network via the users' own computers. The word 'to Skype' entered the language, and the SkypeOut service allowed cheap calls to landlines. Then came the acquisition by Microsoft, a move to server architecture, endless interface redesigns, and a slow loss of ground: personal calls moved to WhatsApp and Telegram, while work calls shifted to Zoom and Teams. In 2025, Microsoft shut down the service, urging users to switch to Teams, so today Skype is more of a monument to an era than a working tool. There are many live alternatives: Zoom and Google Meet for meetings, Teams for the office, WhatsApp and Telegram for calls, and the open Jitsi for your own server.
