Few believed in the film based on the attraction: pirate movies by the early 2000s were considered a dead and unprofitable genre. Gore Verbinski bet not on seriousness, but on excitement — there’s cursed gold, skeletons in the moonlight, chases under sails, and boardings filmed with clear pleasure. And then Johnny Depp entered the frame with his Captain Jack Sparrow, walking like a drunken cat and with a logic that no one around understands — and turned the whole structure upside down. Formally, the story centers around a decent blacksmith, the governor's daughter, and a rescue operation, but the film belongs to a secondary character who is always lying and always turns out to be right. It is this mismatch — a big studio blockbuster and a completely rogue hero within it — that is memorable; the franchise grew from here, but it has not been able to replicate the lightness of the first part.
