In brief
  • Dave Bautista replaced Ryan Hurst in the role of Kratos.
  • Hurst's injury required reshoots for four episodes.
  • Amazon has ordered two seasons, filming has begun in Vancouver.
  • The premiere date for the series has not yet been announced.

According to the American publication Variety, Dave Bautista will play the role of Kratos in the adaptation of the popular video game series God of War. The actor, who gained fame in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in the epic adaptation of 'Dune', will now become the central figure of the new television project being developed jointly by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

Actor replacement after injury

Initially, the lead role was planned to be played by Ryan Hurst. However, during filming, he sustained a serious injury that required surgery and a long rehabilitation period. The producers did not want to delay the schedule, so they decided to find a replacement, and Bautista was invited to play the role of Kratos.

Production schedule

Amazon has already ordered two seasons of the series, anticipating their consecutive filming. The first footage began shooting in Vancouver in February of this year. After the new actor is confirmed, the filming process will resume in the coming weeks.

Before the injury, Hurst managed to shoot four episodes, but all scenes featuring him will be reshot with Batista to ensure consistency in the main character's portrayal.

The exact premiere date has not yet been announced, which is typical for projects of this scale, where final post-production work can take a significant amount of time.

The role of Atreus — the son of Kratos and the second key character of the series — will be played by young actor Callum Vinson, known as Henry Collins from the series 'Chucky'. A complete list of project participants is available in the official press materials.

Some observers note that this project appears to be a typical example of a corporate approach to popular franchises: large studios strive to quickly monetize a well-known brand, replacing actors without significant delays to avoid disrupting the financial plan.

For fans of the video game, the question is how well the new actor will be able to convey the character of Kratos, known for his toughness and inner struggle. Despite Batista often playing comedic roles, his physical fitness and experience in action films raise certain hopes.

Overall, the series promises to be one of the most ambitious adaptations of video games in television history, combining high production standards with an attempt to preserve the spirit of the original product.
