A book from 1981, which introduced the profiler as a hero in popular literature. Will Graham has left the FBI and lives quietly because a past case cost him too much; he is pulled back in because someone is methodically destroying entire families, and the pattern suggests that it will only get worse. Harris makes a move that defined the entire subsequent tradition of the genre: to catch the killer, the investigator must think like the killer — and this endeavor does not go without consequences. Here, Dr. Lecter first appears, still in a secondary role, but already making a strong impression. A separate strength of the novel is that the criminal is presented from the inside — not as a monstrous function, but as a person with a biography and a terrifying internal logic, and this understanding makes it harder, not easier, for the reader. It is 'Red Dragon' that set the template for half of the crime stories about serial killers that followed.
