Chrome appeared in 2008 with a technical idea that was fresh at the time: each tab is a separate process. A crashed site does not take down the entire browser, and a malicious page is sandboxed. Plus, a fast JavaScript engine and a minimalist window where the address bar is also a search bar. This was enough to capture the market in just a few years and make Chromium — the open-source foundation of the browser — the basis for Edge, Opera, Brave, and Yandex Browser. There is a price to dominance, and it is worth knowing: the appetite for RAM has become a joke, the browser by default is tied to a Google account and its advertising ecosystem, and changes in the extension system have weakened ad blockers. Synchronization, password manager, and developer tools are among the best. Need privacy and an independent engine — look at Firefox; like Chrome without tracking — try Brave.
